How to find a job in the time of recession

This is the first article in the series of articles written with the intention to give people answer on how to find a job in the time of recession question. In this article we will concentrate to resume writing, or to be more specific, what mistakes you should avoid when writing your resume.
In the time of the recession for every job opening there is hundreds, if not thousands application and resumes send. So if you think that HR officer or HR department will closely read every single one of them you are totally wrong. To improve your chances to make your resume stands out and find a job you should avoid:

1. Wrong contact info: Believe it or not there are numerous resumes with missing or wrong contact info. Before submitting revise and check that your name, address, phone and email are correct. And please avoid email addresses like wildgirl69@email.com or bigboy@email.com.
Those kinds of emails only prove to HR officer that you are not serious candidate. Use emails in format: name@email.com.

2. Resume without a focus: employers only scan your resume for about 20-30 sec, and they want to immediately see what you are good at and if your skills match their job requirements. When writing a resume it is best to use same keywords that employer used in job description. So if job description asked for "article writer with experience in sport coverage" use that same formulation when writing your resume. Of course that only applies if you got that experience.

3. Resume focused on your needs and not the job seeker needs: Very simple, don't write things like: "I'm applying for this job because I'm unemployed", or "I seek higher paying job", or similar. How can you find the job if you only speaking about what you need? Use formulations like: "I'm applying for this job because with my current knowledge I can contribute to success of your business" or something like that. Believe me, you will have much better chances to get that job.

4. Not using bulleted style: much easier for employer to read and preferred by every HR professional.

5. Resume templates from Microsoft Word: Employers have seen thousands and templates don't stand out. Most of them have strange formatting. Be unique. You should prove that you're the best man for the job and it's hard if your resume looks like everybody else.

6. Lies: Please don't lie! It's very easy to find that out and how to find a job if you are labeled as a liar? HR people know each other and there is great chance that you will be checked out. So, don't lie about having references if you don't, about reasons you left your previous employment etc. If they label you as a liar not only you'll lost any chance to get the job you're applying to, but most likely you will lose any chance to find a job in that company or in any other company if the HR officers knows each other.

Work, Education and Free time

These days there are very few jobs for life, you always have to be thinking one step ahead if you want to develop your career or job prospects. Take students gone are the days where you did your degree without having a job. Now there a 23 year old students studying MBA´s and holding down full time jobs. Sometimes this is just to help to try and pay off their rising education bills other times its to support a family which they now have. Another reason is because of the job market demanding that you have experience and the degree and this generation want to get ahead as quickly as possible.

HOW DOES THIS AID YOUR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT?

Working while studying because you are in too much debt helps you to learn time management and finances. Working to help support your family also helps but maybe your personal development should have started before you decided to start a family. If you had learned to use protective measures in your relationship and/or had thought through the financial burden of having children while you yourself had not finished your education yet, you might not be feeling overwhelmed right now trying to balance school, work and family life. Getting a job due to the job market demanding experience and the degree but then not being able to concentrate fully on either can have devastating effects. Don't just take any job that you can get, if you are really serious about getting experience and that degree or MBA choose a company that will support this and understand when it is exam time and you need to devote more hours to study than to getting that report in on time.
One of the basics of personal development should be common sense however this is not something you can do a course on. The closest thing would be a course on decision making and analysis. You also have to be motivated. You can get a mentor to help and guide you but at the end of the day they are not you only you can take the steps needed to get you where you want to be. Now with the Internet there is no end of information on any given topic you just have to take the time to search. If you want to improve your skills there are a lot of free courses out there. Or if you can use the skill in your current job maybe you can get your company to help pay. Anything is possible you just have to be realistic with your time and money and your abilities. Nothing can help you more than knowing yourself, your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes.
A lot of people wait until something happens to them before they start thinking about there next job or career. This can happen due to a milestone birthday or being made redundant. This is being reactive not proactive. You should always be thinking of the next move before you become stuck or unhappy in your current job. This is part of work life balance. Career changes cant happen overnight you need to plan 2 to 6 years to get the skills, openings and experience needed to change your career successfully. Whatever skill are in demand now will not be the in thing in 6 years time. Take your time and don't rush into picking something new to do nothing would be worse than taking 3 years to move to something you hate. Of course dot forget to network even when you don't think you have a network start with friends and family, you never know where it will lead
Don't forget to think about retirement. It is never to early to start putting money aside and also think about what you might like to do with all that free time. Maybe join some associations, chair on some boards. This is a time where you could study again something you have always wanted to study but did not as you did not think it would have been useful for a job or you got talked out of it when you were young. What about travel is there a country you have always wanted to visit? What language do they speak? I have always wanted to learn to fix bikes and cars and by the time i retire i will have the time and money to spend on this.
Also have fun you may find that things you do in your free time will help you gain skills that will prove invaluable in a different job or career. For example you may be doing a flower arranging course were you meet someone who is looking for a partner in there wedding planning business. Along with your great organizational skills this might be an area for you to look into.

Personal and professional development are one and the same it just depends on how you use it.

10 Tips to Improve Confidence Quickly

If you want to improve confidence in your daily life, there are many ways you can go about it. This is, after all, a serious issue that affects every aspect of your life. It's worth devoting some time and energy to this goal!

The tips we will be covering here are not meant to be comprehensive, but designed to get you moving in the right direction. Some of them may not seem like they are directly connected to confidence, but they really are. These tips are not listed in any particular order of importance. Focus on the ones that you resonate with.

1. Learn how to breathe! Seriously, people lacking in confidence are usually shallow breathers. If you need help, study yoga, chi gung or look for books or courses on proper breathing. If you don't get enough oxygen, you will tend to feel anxious and lacking in confidence.

2. Get regular exercise. This is another way to get more oxygen, and it also gives you better health overall, which is important for confidence. Pick an exercise program you will enjoy, whether it involves sports, a gym or hiking outdoors.

3. Learn something new. Pick something that you don't urgently need to do, but that you always wanted to know, like a new language, art, dancing, cooking, a musical instrument or sport. Don't pressure yourself to excel at it, just have fun picking up a new skill.

4. Change your habits. Start in small ways, like the routes you walk or drive. Try eating different food, try a new hair style or way of dressing. It doesn't have to be drastic. The point is, people who lack confidence often seek a feeling of safety in comfortable routines -and stepping outside of your comfort zone is something you need to get comfortable with!

5. Get rid of clutter. Dump those old magazines, papers, clothes you'll never wear, broken toys from when you were twelve, etc. This is good advice for almost anyone, no matter what their issues. In this case of confidence, however, this will help you feel more clarity and a sense that you can move in new directions.

6. Pay attention to your speech patterns. Very often, people with low self confidence speak in a low or halting voice. Don't shout at people, but focus on making yourself heard. Do this when ordering your morning coffee, when talking on the phone or at a meeting at work.

7. Don't agree with everyone! Being agreeable is another habit many people need to break. Don't argue just for the sake of it; in fact you don't have to argue at all. The point is not to go out of your way to show people that you agree with them when you either disagree or are neutral. You could say something like, "I can see you point of view, but I haven't quite made up my mind yet." What you say is really not as important as how you feel as you're saying it. It's not your job to boost everyone else's ego!

8. Sit, stand and move with confidence. This may seem either silly or obvious, but how you hold yourself has a lot to do with how you feel about yourself. It works both ways. If you are feeling anxious or lacking in confidence, you will tend to slouch, look downwards and unconsciously try not to take up too much space. Yet doing these things reinforces these very feelings. So if you can sit up straight, look directly at people and walk in a way that shows you are comfortable in your own skin, you will feel this way.

9. Mirrors are your friend. At least, you can make friends with them. Very often, when we are not feeling confident, we don't like to look at our own reflection. This is another exercise that is very simple, and you don' t need to go overboard with it. When you are near a mirror, just look yourself in the eyes for a few seconds. Try to smile and feel some love for yourself. If you are in public, you can do this in a low key manner. Most importantly, don't avoid looking at yourself!

10. Keep up appearances. This may sound superficial, because it is! We are talking about appearances here. Dress in a way that makes you feel good about yourself. Likewise, keep your hair styled in a manner that compliments you. You don't need a gigantic budget to accomplish this. Just make the most of what you have, and pay attention to how you look. This isn't to impress people, it's to show yourself that you are taking the time to look your best.
