Difference Between Resume, CV & Biodata

RESUME

Resume Is a French word meaning "summary", and true to the word meaning, signifies a summary of one's employment, education, and other skills, used in applying for a new position. A resume seldom exceeds one side of an A4 sheet, and at the most two sides. They do not list out all the education and qualifications, but only highlight specific skills customized to target the job profile in question. A resume is usually broken into bullets and written in the third person to appear objective and formal. A good resume starts with a brief Summary of Qualifications, followed by Areas of Strength or Industry Expertise in keywords, followed by Professional Experience in reverse chronological order. Focus is on the most recent experiences, and prior experiences summarized. The content aims at providing the reader a balance of responsibilities and accomplishments for each position. After Work experience come Professional Affiliations, Computer Skills, and Education

C.V. CURRICULUM VITAE

C.V Is a Latin word meaning "course of life". Curriculum Vitae (C.V.) is therefore a regular or particular course of study pertaining to education and life. A C.V. is more detailed than a resume, usually 2 to 3 pages, but can run even longer as per the requirement. A C.V. generally lists out every skills, jobs, degrees, and professional affiliations the applicant has acquired, usually in chronological order. A C.V. displays general talent rather than specific skills for any specific positions.

BIO-DATA

Bio Data the short form for Biographical Data, is the old-fashioned terminology for Resume or C.V. The emphasis in a bio data is on personal particulars like date of birth, religion, sex, race, nationality, residence, martial status, and the like. Next comes a chronological listing of education and experience. The things normally found in a resume, that is specific skills for the job in question comes last, and are seldom included. Bio-data also includes applications made in specified formats as required by the company.
A resume is ideally suited when applying for middle and senior level positions, where experience and specific skills rather than education is important. A C.V., on the other hand is the preferred option for fresh graduates, people looking for a career change, and those applying for academic positions. The term bio-data is mostly used in India while applying to government jobs, or when applying for research grants and other situations where one has to submit descriptive essays.
Resumes present a summary of highlights and allow the prospective employer to scan through the document visually or electronically, to see if your skills match their available positions. A good resume can do that very effectively, while a C.V. cannot. A bio-data could still perform this role, especially if the format happens to be the one recommended by the employer.
Personal information such as age, sex, religion and others, and hobbies are never mentioned in a resume. Many people include such particulars in the C.V. However, this is neither required nor considered in the US market. A Bio-data, on the other hand always include such personal particulars.

Mastering Public Speaking Through Three Basic Principals

Mastering public speaking is an important step for people from all walks of life. Regardless of your career, at some point you will have to talk in front of people, so learning how to convincingly get your point across is vital.

Before even starting with your presentation delivery, take time to think about how your speech will sound and what it will feel like to the audience. And how is it going to feel to you to give the speech? Without visualizing the speech, it won't be as convincing. Visualization is simply a power that cannot be understated. By really thinking about how you will give your speech ahead of time, you'll be well on your way to mastering public speaking.

You absolutely need to have everything down before you give the speech as far as what you plan to say. Without a firm grasp of what you're going to say to your audience, you will fumble and feel nervous and shaky. But if you really know your content matter thoroughly, your chances of success with your speech will skyrocket. Take the time to rehearse and practice every part of your speech. It may seem basic, but this is a vital part of learning to master public speaking.

By that token, you should avoid statements that are negative about your public speaking abilities. Try not to think in terms of how much you hate public speaking or how bad you are at it, and instead focus on your positive speaking abilities.. No one is inherently bad at anything; public speaking is an ability that is acquired with time and practice. Instead, think "I can become a better speaker" or "I am already a good speaker and I am confident and successful".

Try to keep all three of these factors in mind when you go to deliver speeches to a crowd. The keys to focus on are visualization, memorizing your content inside and out, and really retraining your attitude to shift from negative to positive about your speaking abilities. By focusing on these things, you will be able to grasp the art of mastering public speaking.

Tips for Controlling Your Speed in Public Speaking

Nothing is more frustrating than listening to a public speaker deliver a speech or presentation at 100 mph. A few minutes at this speed is one thing; however, 50 minutes or more at this pace can easily lose your listeners. Talking too fast is tiring for both you, the speaker, and your audience.
2 other factors that you should take into account are:
  1. the faster you talk, the more likely you are to trip over your words; and,
  2. if you have an accent, you are twice as likely not to be understood because of both your speed and your lack of clear diction or articulation.
One of the best ways to regulate your speed is to take a course in voice training because in discovering your true voice, you will have to slow down. (I am not talking about speaking slowly – you can do 80 mph and still be understood!) The breathing that you will learn will give you total control over your voice as well as your speed. Admittedly, if I have 5 minutes to talk about my business, I will speak a bit faster than if I have 20 minutes.
If you are not interested in improving the sound of your speaking voice but want a means of slowing down, I suggest that you get an audio book as well as the book in written form and practice reading out loud in time with the professional reader. This is a wonderful exercise that can make quite a difference. You will think that you are speaking too slowly. If you record yourself, however, you will discover that your slower speed is definitely not too slow and that you sound ‘normal.'
Often those who speak too fast are unable to hear it unless they are recorded. Your inner ear is comfortable with your quick pace. Listen to yourself on a recording, however, and your outer ear will recognize that you are too fast. [Your inner ear is how you hear yourself; your outer ear is how you hear your voice on your voicemail, for instance. Incidentally, your voice on recording equipment is how everyone else recognizes you.]
You may think that your speed in talking is not important but in today's hectic business world, in which people want an answer immediately, they do not want to have to ask to slow down or to repeat yourself because they cannot keep up with you.

When Nervousness Makes Your Voice Quiver

Has this ever happened to you? You stand to give your speech or presentation; and, when you begin speaking what comes out of your mouth is higher in pitch and quivering to boot. So what is to be done?

In most cases, nervousness is the cause of the quiver. (There are some voices, however, that quiver whether one is nervous or not.) There is a means of eliminating the quiver that works even when you are nervous.
Personally, I like nervousness. It is that wonderful rush of adrenaline that, if used to your advantage, can give you an edge in public speaking. What I don't want, however, is for your nervousness to be seen or heard. The quiver is definitely telling your audience that you would rather be somewhere else.

A quivering voice is the result of stress and pressure on your delicate vocal folds (cords) and throat. Nervousness exacerbates the problem. By learning how to breathe with the support of your diaphragm and allowing your chest to become your primary amplifier, you will find the quiver disappearing automatically. It is truly amazing to see and hear this happen.

When I was teaching at the college level, one of my students was a 40-year-old woman. Her nervousness was so great when she gave her 1st speech, that I was surprised she didn't stop and leave the room. By the end of the semester, however, the change in the woman was stunning. During this public speaking course, I taught all of my students how to find their ‘real' voice, the one that is richer, deeper, warmer and mature in sound. That was the reason her voice stopped quivering. She was still nervous but we were unaware of it because she was able to control it.

And, it is not just the nervous who can experience a shaking or quivering voice. This problem often affects the elderly and is sometimes heard in younger voices as well. Changing the way you produce your sound will not only solve the problem but give you a voice that is ageless – not too old – not too young. It will be warmer in quality, deeper in pitch, and much more resonant.

Your quivering voice will not go away until you eliminate the undue stress on your vocal folds which can only happen when you learn to support your breath and use your chest to power your sound. As an added bonus, you will find it is also the best means of controlling your nervousness in any form of public speaking.

Moderately paced, steady, and bang on target!!

Well that's how I'd sum up my progress in my first (and fortunately, only) attempt at CAT. Without any background or knowledge whatsoever about Management, I'd decided to take the plunge. And a blind plunge it was.
I had started in July with an attempt at CAT 2006 (Dunno why? But still...), started joining online forums and contacting remote friends for advice. I realized I was really miserable at quant, and focussed on quant itself for the month. I started with Arun Sharma, and pretty soon I was sitting for hours solving exercises. I'd spend up to an hour on some LOD III problems, (no other respite!) and still hope to get somewhere...
In august I started scouting for help, and in the course, joined the TIME aimcat series and a revision series with Munira Lokhandwala. The actual number of fundae in CAT are quite few, and even in the revision series, I think pretty much everything was covered. In the months of August and September, I focused a lot on solving section tests, and in my test taking abilities. The most important lesson here was to program myself to leave a question in 30secs/1 min if I could not reach a solution.

September and October were again spent in taking a lot of mocks. I'd borrowed papers from IMS, CL, CF, and PT practically everywhere and used to solve some 2-3 mocks every week. The important point was comparing my attempts with the 'easy' questions as listed in the keys to the mock. I was very active on Pagalguy, constantly keeping myself updated on AIMCAT's and CL mocks.
The last 3 weeks were spent solving quant and DI Topicwise from old TIME papers. The key here was solving in a group, as even if one of us got the answer, we could see the approach and rapidly move ahead.

Another important point I'd like to highlight here is the effect that the mock tests had on my confidence levels. Getting a top 100 rank almost every time and comparing my attempts with other scorers made me more and surer of my strengths and weaknesses in handling the CAT. In the end, it’s the confidence that you have in yourself that enables you to perform your best…

XAT....Big time flop, scored 60 percentile in quant!
NMAT.....finally selected, merit no 121
IIFT....waitlisted
FMS....Converted MBA (MS) Paid and then withdrew fees
MH MBA CET....99.83 percentile (after 3 Back to Back GDPI’s and some travelling)
SNAP..... All India written Topper, selected in SIBM.
CAT.....99.90 percentile, converted MDI.
IIM’s (Separate from CAT yaar, all important!) Converted AHMEDABAD,
Calcutta, Indore, Kozhikode, Waitlist 152@ Lucknow

Moral of the story....No matter how many calls U convert, U are as good as the best college U converted. Cheers and best of luck!

Remaining Positive at Job Interview

Preparing for an important interview takes time and practice. The feeling of helplessness that overcomes candidates applying for a position can become a factor in the interview process. That sense of vulnerability can cause an interviewee to lack the self confidence that is sought by most employers. The following are tips and tricks can help you to take control of the interview.
Research, research, research. We would suggest that your research include, whenever possible, a conversation with an employee of the company or organization to explore the group culture which would clarify what they value, how they do business, how they treat people, and whether people enjoy working for them. The result of this arduous search will be the assurance that you can bring to an interview any and all available knowledge about the targeted company. This assurance will bolster the self confidence required to make that positive first impression and will help the candidate to be perceived as the problem solver that the company requires. The reason for this is that an employer will be seeking to hire someone capable of solving the company's problems.
Let me give you an Example! A well chosen example can be compared to the picture worth a thousand words which will vastly broaden the positive impact of any answer. Whenever possible, the question will be followed by a short but clear theoretical answer followed by the candidate saying: "Let me give you an example ". Use strategically chosen examples of your past achievements to clarify and illustrate your answers. When asked about business solutions, for example, a candidate can show not only how he or she solved problems but also how they contributed to the success of others by quietly providing help and information behind the scenes which will show them as a team builder as well as a coach.

Answering the question, although it is not always easy, is an important part of controlling the interview. Such tactics portray a lack of focus and an inability or unwillingness to follow instructions all of which are characteristics undesirable in a potential employee. Remain positive at all times. Being able to retrieve the positive elements of even the most negative situation is a desirable characteristic in an employee. Let us take an extreme example. Being fired or downsized can be the most negative experience possible. Yet some of the most successful executives in the history of business have been fired at some point in their career. Those who continued to be successful were not demoralized. They were able to portray there firing as a key learning experience and many were subsequently able to show exactly how what they learnt from that experience contributed to their future success.
The knowledge inherent in all four of these strategies will put the candidate in the power position of being able to deliver the message of their choice to a potential employer under any and all circumstances including the unpredictable situational questions. Practicing and mastering the techniques with friends, colleagues and references will bolster the confidence level of an applicant and will make any interview a positive experience.

Not only do employers not appreciate waiting for job applicants, but they will also think you are not careful about being on time for work or meeting deadlines. Remember first impression does matter, so don't let your employers have a bad impression on you by not being on time.

3. Wear appropriate clothes
Dress neatly and in a style appropriate for the job you are seeking.

4. Put your best foot forward
Remember one of the most important reasons for the interview is to show that you have the ability to do the job. Impress your employers by your witty answers and by being positive without being boastful though. Be courteous, alert and attentive all throughout the interview.

5. Ask questions
The interview is a two way process. Interviewers will more likely appreciate it if you will ask questions pertaining to the job you are applying for and it simply shows that you are really interested to be part of their company.

6. Write a "thank you" letter
Write a letter thanking the person or people you spoke to at the interview. You may also include in your letter clarifications about something during your interview.

We know how important time is in our lives. Often we do not utilize what limited time we have effectively. That is why we end up with piles and piles of tasks to do and jobs to finish. Multi-tasking is a much less effective way of doing things since moving from one task to another normally leads to losing your momentum and focus. Yes it is okay to multi-task with simple activities. Remember to avoid doing it for those that demands deep thinking and complex thoughts. Give focus and attention to important tasks and maintain a level of discipline wherein you demand nothing less than the best when doing your duties. Especially when these are things that are crucial in achieving the goals and objectives you set out to accomplish.

That's the reason why it's important to properly plan, schedule and prioritize all your activities. Do this in the order you wrote your task on your sheet. Use no more than the time allotted to the task. Give it 100% of your attention.

Another common mistake that should be avoided is working in an environment that is not supporting the task at hand. For instance, having a messy work area leaves you with little room or none to focus on your duties. Working in areas where you are prone to being constantly interrupted often leads to wasting precious time. As your train of thought, momentum and flow are interrupted you also lose focus on your priorities.

It is important then to eliminate the clutter in your surroundings in order to create an environment where you can work freely towards achieving your plans.

Understanding yourself and managing yourself is very important. This will help you to enjoy life even more.

What To Look For In A First Job

Many recent college grads are worried about just landing any job possible.  They know that the job market is currently a rather toxic environment and because of that recent grads often have a survivor-like mentality.  But if you find that after graduating you have a few opportunities open to you there are some things you should consider that many people overlook.
    • Look for a company that offers you a chance to work with a host of different types of people.  While you may be going into the position with a specific role, if you work in a position that requires you to communicate with all different types of people and work with a group.  Future companies will value your ability to work with various positions and will appreciate it if you are able to bring workers together.  

    • Choose a position which can allow you to do more than is asked of you.  If you can identify a company wide problem or anticipate the needs of your co-workers you are likely to impress management and open yourself up to future positions.  A company that encourages frequent communication with management and creative thinking is one that is likely to allow you to go above and beyond.

    • Work for a manager who has a serious interest in mentoring you.  If you work for somebody who wants to teach you you'll have a much more worthwhile experience.  As a first time employee a company is making an investment by hiring you so it makes sense that they'll want to train you but it is rare to find somebody who really wants to help you succeed.  These types of managers can help you to quickly make more earnings and are likely to be a stepping stone in your path to career success.

    • Don't choose a job solely based on the money.  If one position is better suited to be a learning experience but has a lower starting salary you may want to consider it more heavily.  Remember that your first job is the beginning of a life long career so look at the long term rewards and don't just focus on immediate benefits, although those do of course matter.

    • Even if you end up having to take a position that you are less than thrilled about it, approach it as an opportunity to learn a lot about yourself and about what you want to do.  Worst comes to worst you'll learn that you want nothing to do with the industry you started in.  Give yourself some time to adjust before forming an opinion about your job however.  Your attitude will determine a lot and the first few days are bound to be the toughest.  

Don't just assume that just because you are in an entry level position you are going to have to deal with a rather meaningless job.  A good first job will give you opportunities to learn and grow a lot and will likely be a jumping off point for your career.

Internship Evaluation Test Details

Internship Evaluation is an important part of the Internship Fair. It will be used to judge a student’s Technical and Aptitude skills.
v  Test Sections
o   Aptitude: Basic and Advanced Aptitude (MBA grads have to appear only for aptitude test)
o   Technical: Basic and Advanced Technical, primarily judging concepts of C / C++
v  Test Duration: 60 – 75 Minutes
v  Online Test
o   Non- NCR students will appear for Online test.
o   Test will be open from: 25-28 February 2012.
v  Offline Test
o   NCR students will appear for Offline test on: 25 – 26 February 2012 at below venue.
