Work, Education and Free time

These days there are very few jobs for life, you always have to be thinking one step ahead if you want to develop your career or job prospects. Take students gone are the days where you did your degree without having a job. Now there a 23 year old students studying MBA´s and holding down full time jobs. Sometimes this is just to help to try and pay off their rising education bills other times its to support a family which they now have. Another reason is because of the job market demanding that you have experience and the degree and this generation want to get ahead as quickly as possible.

HOW DOES THIS AID YOUR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT?

Working while studying because you are in too much debt helps you to learn time management and finances. Working to help support your family also helps but maybe your personal development should have started before you decided to start a family. If you had learned to use protective measures in your relationship and/or had thought through the financial burden of having children while you yourself had not finished your education yet, you might not be feeling overwhelmed right now trying to balance school, work and family life. Getting a job due to the job market demanding experience and the degree but then not being able to concentrate fully on either can have devastating effects. Don't just take any job that you can get, if you are really serious about getting experience and that degree or MBA choose a company that will support this and understand when it is exam time and you need to devote more hours to study than to getting that report in on time.
One of the basics of personal development should be common sense however this is not something you can do a course on. The closest thing would be a course on decision making and analysis. You also have to be motivated. You can get a mentor to help and guide you but at the end of the day they are not you only you can take the steps needed to get you where you want to be. Now with the Internet there is no end of information on any given topic you just have to take the time to search. If you want to improve your skills there are a lot of free courses out there. Or if you can use the skill in your current job maybe you can get your company to help pay. Anything is possible you just have to be realistic with your time and money and your abilities. Nothing can help you more than knowing yourself, your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes.
A lot of people wait until something happens to them before they start thinking about there next job or career. This can happen due to a milestone birthday or being made redundant. This is being reactive not proactive. You should always be thinking of the next move before you become stuck or unhappy in your current job. This is part of work life balance. Career changes cant happen overnight you need to plan 2 to 6 years to get the skills, openings and experience needed to change your career successfully. Whatever skill are in demand now will not be the in thing in 6 years time. Take your time and don't rush into picking something new to do nothing would be worse than taking 3 years to move to something you hate. Of course dot forget to network even when you don't think you have a network start with friends and family, you never know where it will lead
Don't forget to think about retirement. It is never to early to start putting money aside and also think about what you might like to do with all that free time. Maybe join some associations, chair on some boards. This is a time where you could study again something you have always wanted to study but did not as you did not think it would have been useful for a job or you got talked out of it when you were young. What about travel is there a country you have always wanted to visit? What language do they speak? I have always wanted to learn to fix bikes and cars and by the time i retire i will have the time and money to spend on this.
Also have fun you may find that things you do in your free time will help you gain skills that will prove invaluable in a different job or career. For example you may be doing a flower arranging course were you meet someone who is looking for a partner in there wedding planning business. Along with your great organizational skills this might be an area for you to look into.

Personal and professional development are one and the same it just depends on how you use it.

10 Tips to Improve Confidence Quickly

If you want to improve confidence in your daily life, there are many ways you can go about it. This is, after all, a serious issue that affects every aspect of your life. It's worth devoting some time and energy to this goal!

The tips we will be covering here are not meant to be comprehensive, but designed to get you moving in the right direction. Some of them may not seem like they are directly connected to confidence, but they really are. These tips are not listed in any particular order of importance. Focus on the ones that you resonate with.

1. Learn how to breathe! Seriously, people lacking in confidence are usually shallow breathers. If you need help, study yoga, chi gung or look for books or courses on proper breathing. If you don't get enough oxygen, you will tend to feel anxious and lacking in confidence.

2. Get regular exercise. This is another way to get more oxygen, and it also gives you better health overall, which is important for confidence. Pick an exercise program you will enjoy, whether it involves sports, a gym or hiking outdoors.

3. Learn something new. Pick something that you don't urgently need to do, but that you always wanted to know, like a new language, art, dancing, cooking, a musical instrument or sport. Don't pressure yourself to excel at it, just have fun picking up a new skill.

4. Change your habits. Start in small ways, like the routes you walk or drive. Try eating different food, try a new hair style or way of dressing. It doesn't have to be drastic. The point is, people who lack confidence often seek a feeling of safety in comfortable routines -and stepping outside of your comfort zone is something you need to get comfortable with!

5. Get rid of clutter. Dump those old magazines, papers, clothes you'll never wear, broken toys from when you were twelve, etc. This is good advice for almost anyone, no matter what their issues. In this case of confidence, however, this will help you feel more clarity and a sense that you can move in new directions.

6. Pay attention to your speech patterns. Very often, people with low self confidence speak in a low or halting voice. Don't shout at people, but focus on making yourself heard. Do this when ordering your morning coffee, when talking on the phone or at a meeting at work.

7. Don't agree with everyone! Being agreeable is another habit many people need to break. Don't argue just for the sake of it; in fact you don't have to argue at all. The point is not to go out of your way to show people that you agree with them when you either disagree or are neutral. You could say something like, "I can see you point of view, but I haven't quite made up my mind yet." What you say is really not as important as how you feel as you're saying it. It's not your job to boost everyone else's ego!

8. Sit, stand and move with confidence. This may seem either silly or obvious, but how you hold yourself has a lot to do with how you feel about yourself. It works both ways. If you are feeling anxious or lacking in confidence, you will tend to slouch, look downwards and unconsciously try not to take up too much space. Yet doing these things reinforces these very feelings. So if you can sit up straight, look directly at people and walk in a way that shows you are comfortable in your own skin, you will feel this way.

9. Mirrors are your friend. At least, you can make friends with them. Very often, when we are not feeling confident, we don't like to look at our own reflection. This is another exercise that is very simple, and you don' t need to go overboard with it. When you are near a mirror, just look yourself in the eyes for a few seconds. Try to smile and feel some love for yourself. If you are in public, you can do this in a low key manner. Most importantly, don't avoid looking at yourself!

10. Keep up appearances. This may sound superficial, because it is! We are talking about appearances here. Dress in a way that makes you feel good about yourself. Likewise, keep your hair styled in a manner that compliments you. You don't need a gigantic budget to accomplish this. Just make the most of what you have, and pay attention to how you look. This isn't to impress people, it's to show yourself that you are taking the time to look your best.

How Fresh Graduates Can Grow Instead of waiting for the Company to help

Bangalore: As a small experiment, I had put up a skribit sidebar where anybody can suggest what I can write about. Little did I know that it would actually be used seriously. Someone posted the topic 'On how fresh graduates can learn independently and grow. Instead of waiting for the Company to help' and today, there are 9 votes on it!

To be honest, I think I am not qualified enough to answer this question. I am certainly no role model. But since 9 people have voted on it, I feel obliged to write something useful. I have jotted down some thoughts on what ideas and habits have helped me, it may not necessarily be useful for everyone. I hope these fresh graduates who voted will pick the best ideas and habits suited for them.
Character and Lifestyle

Instead of focusing on building a career, why not focus on building a character? The career will take care of itself.

* 'Sow an act, reap a habit; Sow a habit, reap a character; Sow a character, reap a destiny - George Dana Boardman
* As Cal Newport would say, 'Fix the lifestyle you want. Then work backwards from there'. Too often, we confuse the medium (lawyer, doctor, engineer, etc.) with the message (what is important to us, what we want to do). So it is far more important to figure out what you want out of life, then figure out how to achieve that rather than the other way around. And only you can figure this out for yourself.
* I would recommend reading First Things First by Stephen Covey to help you understand your priorities in life.
* Most important of all, find your inner peace. Remember that 'Satisfaction is within'.
Career Building.

Basically, you need to take initiative in what you want to achieve, no one can tell you what you have to do, life is not that simple. I am glad the original question poser said that he/she wanted to grow 'Instead of waiting for the Company to help', you have got that part right already.

I recommend reading:
* The Pmarca Guide to Career Planning, part 2: Skills and education
* Career Advice presentation by Garr Reynolds
* How To Get A Job Like Mine by Aaron Swartz

Get Results
* 'Results, Jay. Results. Otherwise you cant expect rewards.'- Vertigo novel, by Ashok Banker
* Do deliberative practice, not just 'a lot of work.'
* Stick to the 10-year plan. There are no shortcuts to success.
Ultimately, you need to take action and get results. It is not enough to just plan and hope. As Morpheus would say, 'There is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.'

Read
My personal slogan is 'I read. Therefore I do. Therefore I am.' If I compare myself to my school days and today, there has been a major transformation in character and outlook, and I attribute that purely to reading.

A great part of my learning also comes from writing, hence the blog, wiki, books, and twitter. It might seem like a waste of time, but I learn more by communicating. But that is just me.

* Read, Read, Read, the single advice given by Warren Buffett (one of the worlds richest men)
* Tactics For Reading, by Trent Hamm
* 25 Articles Every Student Should Read
* For every hour that you read, you must gain 3 hours of experience-Scott H Young
If you dont know where to start, I would suggest The Personal MBA Reading List.

Friends
Make valuable friends. This is the most important tip I can ever give you.
Equally important, make the right kind of friends. Yes, it is tough to let go of friends who you intuitively know are not the right influence on you, but speaking from experience, it is worth it in the long run.

As a wise man once said, 'Tell me who your friends are, and I will tell you who you are.'
Learn Your Trade

For example, if we are talking about a software engineer:

* Debugging is the most important skill, not coding. I wish I had known this when I was in college.
* Reading is a great habit that has a side-effect that you will also have the ability to read a lot of code and build up the structure inside your head about how the code works, just like you have to imagine what is written in a book or novel.

I also recommend reading:
* How To Be a Programmer
* Do Side projects
* Keep Learning

If you are looking for more in-depth knowledge, I would recommend taking a look at this Stack Overflow discussion.

Make A Difference
Consider this excerpt from a Business Week article:
One vocal camp even maintains that the repetitive nature of writing software code has corrupted Bangalores intellectual spirit. 'These 20-year-olds are like coolies, doing the same job over and over,' says CNR Rao, a Bangalorean scientist who has been an adviser to the Indian government for decades. The software industry, he says, has turned the city into a glorified sweatshop. 'Where is the innovation?' he asks. 'How does this contribute to anything but greed and commerce?'

The joy of programming is the joy of building and creating something. Wouldnt it be amazing if we can build and create something useful for other people? If yes, why arent we doing more of that? After all, there is no dearth of things that we can create.

Hopefully, I have given some food for thought here.

Mastering Public Speaking Through Three Basic Principals

Mastering public speaking is an important step for people from all walks of life. Regardless of your career, at some point you will have to talk in front of people, so learning how to convincingly get your point across is vital.

Before even starting with your presentation delivery, take time to think about how your speech will sound and what it will feel like to the audience. And how is it going to feel to you to give the speech? Without visualizing the speech, it won't be as convincing. Visualization is simply a power that cannot be understated. By really thinking about how you will give your speech ahead of time, you'll be well on your way to mastering public speaking.

You absolutely need to have everything down before you give the speech as far as what you plan to say. Without a firm grasp of what you're going to say to your audience, you will fumble and feel nervous and shaky. But if you really know your content matter thoroughly, your chances of success with your speech will skyrocket. Take the time to rehearse and practice every part of your speech. It may seem basic, but this is a vital part of learning to master public speaking.

By that token, you should avoid statements that are negative about your public speaking abilities. Try not to think in terms of how much you hate public speaking or how bad you are at it, and instead focus on your positive speaking abilities.. No one is inherently bad at anything; public speaking is an ability that is acquired with time and practice. Instead, think "I can become a better speaker" or "I am already a good speaker and I am confident and successful".

Try to keep all three of these factors in mind when you go to deliver speeches to a crowd. The keys to focus on are visualization, memorizing your content inside and out, and really retraining your attitude to shift from negative to positive about your speaking abilities. By focusing on these things, you will be able to grasp the art of mastering public speaking.

Tips for Controlling Your Speed in Public Speaking

Nothing is more frustrating than listening to a public speaker deliver a speech or presentation at 100 mph. A few minutes at this speed is one thing; however, 50 minutes or more at this pace can easily lose your listeners. Talking too fast is tiring for both you, the speaker, and your audience.
2 other factors that you should take into account are:
  1. the faster you talk, the more likely you are to trip over your words; and,
  2. if you have an accent, you are twice as likely not to be understood because of both your speed and your lack of clear diction or articulation.
One of the best ways to regulate your speed is to take a course in voice training because in discovering your true voice, you will have to slow down. (I am not talking about speaking slowly – you can do 80 mph and still be understood!) The breathing that you will learn will give you total control over your voice as well as your speed. Admittedly, if I have 5 minutes to talk about my business, I will speak a bit faster than if I have 20 minutes.
If you are not interested in improving the sound of your speaking voice but want a means of slowing down, I suggest that you get an audio book as well as the book in written form and practice reading out loud in time with the professional reader. This is a wonderful exercise that can make quite a difference. You will think that you are speaking too slowly. If you record yourself, however, you will discover that your slower speed is definitely not too slow and that you sound ‘normal.'
Often those who speak too fast are unable to hear it unless they are recorded. Your inner ear is comfortable with your quick pace. Listen to yourself on a recording, however, and your outer ear will recognize that you are too fast. [Your inner ear is how you hear yourself; your outer ear is how you hear your voice on your voicemail, for instance. Incidentally, your voice on recording equipment is how everyone else recognizes you.]
You may think that your speed in talking is not important but in today's hectic business world, in which people want an answer immediately, they do not want to have to ask to slow down or to repeat yourself because they cannot keep up with you.
Take control of your speed and let the rest of the world understand you the 1st time you say it

When Nervousness Makes Your Voice Quiver

Has this ever happened to you? You stand to give your speech or presentation; and, when you begin speaking what comes out of your mouth is higher in pitch and quivering to boot. So what is to be done?

In most cases, nervousness is the cause of the quiver. (There are some voices, however, that quiver whether one is nervous or not.) There is a means of eliminating the quiver that works even when you are nervous.
Personally, I like nervousness. It is that wonderful rush of adrenaline that, if used to your advantage, can give you an edge in public speaking. What I don't want, however, is for your nervousness to be seen or heard. The quiver is definitely telling your audience that you would rather be somewhere else.

A quivering voice is the result of stress and pressure on your delicate vocal folds (cords) and throat. Nervousness exacerbates the problem. By learning how to breathe with the support of your diaphragm and allowing your chest to become your primary amplifier, you will find the quiver disappearing automatically. It is truly amazing to see and hear this happen.

When I was teaching at the college level, one of my students was a 40-year-old woman. Her nervousness was so great when she gave her 1st speech, that I was surprised she didn't stop and leave the room. By the end of the semester, however, the change in the woman was stunning. During this public speaking course, I taught all of my students how to find their ‘real' voice, the one that is richer, deeper, warmer and mature in sound. That was the reason her voice stopped quivering. She was still nervous but we were unaware of it because she was able to control it.

And, it is not just the nervous who can experience a shaking or quivering voice. This problem often affects the elderly and is sometimes heard in younger voices as well. Changing the way you produce your sound will not only solve the problem but give you a voice that is ageless – not too old – not too young. It will be warmer in quality, deeper in pitch, and much more resonant.

Your quivering voice will not go away until you eliminate the undue stress on your vocal folds which can only happen when you learn to support your breath and use your chest to power your sound. As an added bonus, you will find it is also the best means of controlling your nervousness in any form of public speaking.

Remaining Positive at Job Interview

Preparing for an important interview takes time and practice. The feeling of helplessness that overcomes candidates applying for a position can become a factor in the interview process. That sense of vulnerability can cause an interviewee to lack the self confidence that is sought by most employers. The following are tips and tricks can help you to take control of the interview.
Research, research, research. We would suggest that your research include, whenever possible, a conversation with an employee of the company or organization to explore the group culture which would clarify what they value, how they do business, how they treat people, and whether people enjoy working for them. The result of this arduous search will be the assurance that you can bring to an interview any and all available knowledge about the targeted company. This assurance will bolster the self confidence required to make that positive first impression and will help the candidate to be perceived as the problem solver that the company requires. The reason for this is that an employer will be seeking to hire someone capable of solving the company's problems.
Let me give you an Example! A well chosen example can be compared to the picture worth a thousand words which will vastly broaden the positive impact of any answer. Whenever possible, the question will be followed by a short but clear theoretical answer followed by the candidate saying: "Let me give you an example ". Use strategically chosen examples of your past achievements to clarify and illustrate your answers. A well chosen example can be compared to the picture worth a thousand words which will vastly broaden the positive impact of any answer. When asked about business solutions, for example, a candidate can show not only how he or she solved problems but also how they contributed to the success of others by quietly providing help and information behind the scenes which will show them as a team builder as well as a coach.
Answering the question. When a candidate is asked: "Tell us something about yourself", the standard ice breaker question, they could ask: "Do you mean personally or professionally". Answering the question, although it is not always easy, is an important part of controlling the interview. Such tactics portray a lack of focus and an inability or unwillingness to follow instructions all of which are characteristics undesirable in a potential employee. Answering the question, although it is not always easy, is an important part of controlling the interview.
Remain positive at all times. Being able to retrieve the positive elements of even the most negative situation is a desirable characteristic in an employee. Let us take an extreme example. Being fired or downsized can be the most negative experience possible. Yet some of the most successful executives in the history of business have been fired at some point in their career. Those who continued to be successful were not demoralized. They were able to portray there firing as a key learning experience and many were subsequently able to show exactly how what they learnt from that experience contributed to their future success.
The knowledge inherent in all four of these strategies will put the candidate in the power position of being able to deliver the message of their choice to a potential employer under any and all circumstances including the unpredictable situational questions. Practicing and mastering the techniques with friends, colleagues and references will bolster the confidence level of an applicant and will make any interview a positive experience.

Warnings From Successful Time Management Experts

We know how important time is in our lives. Often we do not utilize what limited time we have effectively. That is why we end up with piles and piles of tasks to do and jobs to finish. Without proper time management we are vulnerable to stress and an overload of responsibilities. Unfortunately most of us who are in such a situation cannot even begin to identify which task should be done first.

It is important in such a situation to give attention to the way we manage our time. Often we do things without much thought; the result is finding ourselves rushing from one task to another.

Needless to say there are habits we need to correct with regards to our time management practices. Here are a couple of things we should consider among tons of other issues.

A lot of us are guilty of multi-tasking. Whether we admit it or not, more than often we find ourselves doing too many things at the same time. Although it seems a good thing especially when we have a long list of tasks to attend to, most often though we end up only completing 50% of them. As a result we sacrifice the quality of our outputs and lessen our productivity even more.

Multi-tasking is a much less effective way of doing things since moving from one task to another normally leads to losing your momentum and focus. Yes it is okay to multi-task with simple activities. Remember to avoid doing it for those that demands deep thinking and complex thoughts. Give focus and attention to important tasks and maintain a level of discipline wherein you demand nothing less than the best when doing your duties. Especially when these are things that are crucial in achieving the goals and objectives you set out to accomplish.

That's the reason why it's important to properly plan, schedule and prioritize all your activities. Do this in the order you wrote your task on your sheet. Use no more than the time allotted to the task. Give it 100% of your attention.

Another common mistake that should be avoided is working in an environment that is not supporting the task at hand. For instance, having a messy work area leaves you with little room or none to focus on your duties. Working in areas where you are prone to being constantly interrupted often leads to wasting precious time. As your train of thought, momentum and flow are interrupted you also lose focus on your priorities.

It is important then to eliminate the clutter in your surroundings in order to create an environment where you can work freely towards achieving your plans.

Understanding yourself and managing yourself is very important. This will help you to enjoy life even more.

Foundation of a Successful Career: Career Planning

It is very important to figure out what exactly you need in life and how to turn that into a reality. A number of people seem to be extremely successful without putting in a lot of effort. These are the people who have planned their careers carefully and have taken the right decisions at the right time. Hence, career planning is very important to attain both your short term and long term goals. Given below are some important steps involved in career planning:

Self assessment

Be completely honest with yourself and assess your skills and the things that you can do best. Remember that the most important thing is to be sure about yourself and about the things you like to do. Devising a career in the line of your hobby is likely to give you more success as compared to others.

Job Market

Next, evaluate the job market and competition to ascertain how difficult it will be to enter into the career field of your choice and what are your chances of success? It is important to realize that a widely popular career path would have higher competition as compared to a relatively new field.

Plan your strategy

Plan in detail about the steps you need to undertake to be successful in the field of your choice. Consider the education or the training required and also your financial viability to afford these courses. It is important to plan all the minute details to ensure success in the long run.

Take help

Career planning is best accomplished if you take professional help. A career counselor can guide you in the right direction but you have to make the final decision yourself.

Convert your hobby into a career

The smartest people are those who convert their hobby into a full fledged career. This ensures that they like what they do and are hence able to do well in their careers.

One of the major reasons about the lack of career awareness in teenagers is the flaw in our education systems. Even the most acclaimed schools do not offer career education and career counseling at an early stage in school. High school students are completely directionless and believe that they are too young to think about something like career planning.

It is important to understand the benefits of prior planning to avoid any pitfalls in the career graph. Get the best possible education and training as it is the first step towards success. Spend time learning about yourself and available career options prior to making the final decision.

Don't hesitate to locate a security device on your Nintendo and clear by hand of some distractions with the aim of will keep you from focusing on the task by the side of employee: Job hunting.

Set Goals in place of Yourself and Prioritize Them

At the introduction of both daylight hours or week, collection your goals. Your goals ought to not be overwhelming ones like "Have a well paying job by the last part of the month," but considerably a cycle of minor goals with the aim of will prime to employment. That way, both schedule you check something inedible your file it will be a victory.

Possible goals might include pronouncement barred the superlative person to write to not far off from an interview or habitual a prospective employer's phone call by the last part of the workday. By giving both of these tasks a priority level--low to high--you arise, you can kind really you wear out your schedule wisely. The priority level of these goals will alteration on a daily basis, and the smart job hunter learns to roll with the punches in order to complete high-priority tasks.

Plan to Work Regular Hours by the side of Your situation Search

Regular and steady hours whilst you hunt in place of toil. This doesn't mean with the aim of you maintain to sit hunched on your central processing unit in place of a rotund eight hours, but you ought to be liability things with the aim of will move your job hunt send on. Sample tasks might include phone calls to contract the proper spelling of the names of hiring managers; drafting a cover note; researching a company; networking with a national on coffee; and training by hand on a central processing unit plan with the aim of will kind you more hirable. Things an Engineering student must know

1) SWOT without the T* (S- Strength, W- Weakness, O-Opportunity, T-Threat)

After four years of studying, an engineering graduate must know his strengths and the exact nature of the work he/she is looking for. Because there are some who can't really figure out what they want to do even at the end of four years. Following are the four types of engineers that usually exist. (If you belong to the fifth type, kindly write back to me.)

a) Tech guy
If you are confident enough of your technical skills, then apply at an engineering-oriented organization where practical work is required. Simple and trouble free!

b) Grammars with good grades
Not any good in the lab? But you can cram things easily and were lucky enough to pass your exams with flying colors? Then you can go for teaching and the academic side of engineering.

c) Researchers
If you love to write, then the best thing you can do is to fuse your professional studies with your passion. You can go for technical report writings, research paper writings and also end user manuals writings.

d) Communicator
A rare breed but they still exist. If you are good at communication and your convincing power is strong, then you can opt to be a sales engineer (highest paid are the ones who bring business for the organization) and also go for the technical support side.  Whether it is technical side or administration side, your should know how to communicate with business and other people.

e) *T - without the 'T' because I think at the start of our professional lives, we shouldn't consider anything as a threat.

2. Switching careers

Honestly speaking, after the third year, some of us are completely sure that this is not what we actually wanted to do, but at this stage completing the degree is the only option left. So yes complete your degree and then do a self-analysis. If not engineering, then what exactly is your cup of tea? It's high time to muddle through the outside pressure.

3. Job role

Before landing any kind of job, you must know the progressive role of the job and its hierarchy. You just can't let anyone take advantage of your skills and degree. In the current situation, organizations are hiring engineers where they used to hire laymen. So keep your ears and eyes open!

4. Trust me, I am an engineer

Act like an engineer. As you have the most influential bachelors degree. Your body language, dressing, confidence and attitude should articulate before you speak. No 'Harry Potter' specs and no baggy jeans. Look tough and smart. Do you know that on August 18, 2010 the Guinness Book of World Records chose 'ENGINEERING' as the TOUGHEST course among all other courses! And you nailed it.  Your appearance itself tells that you are an ENGINEER.

5. Human resource

Engineers must know the role of HR, so that their rights are not oppressed. If you can't afford to do a Professional Practice or HR course, then at least Google it.  Engineers should know humans are assets for a firm or an organization. Respect the human value. "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."   Matthew 7:13-14.

6. Sexual harassment

Engineers are too busy making circuits work all four years. When they step in to practical life and see the behavior of people around, they are completely shattered. They actually know nothing about how to survive in such situations. So understand that flirting, dirty jokes and abuses (text, call and verbal) are sexual harassment. This is a serious threat for a naive engineer and affects his/her professional and personal life.

7. Social responsibility

Not only engineers but every graduate in this country should understand his/her social responsibility. Student life was fun but it's OVER. Now it's time to pay back in any way you can but more important is to realize that. Don't try to implement any logical approach here. Think positive because sometimes the most useless circuits work! Understand the people near you and make use of them to lift from your position without disturbing others.  Hardwork and God's grace is the father and mother of the son "success".  Don't deviate the way of your social responsibility in order to reap the future harvest.  When you get a good and comfortable amount as salary, use this for your future and your family.  Saving is the main source of social responsibility to save for your next generation.   Your expectation to spend the huge money for your pleasure will lead to so many complications in future.  Steady and careful spending of money is the right attitude when you get a comfortable salary all on a sudden.  It is the responsibility of every Engineer to build an UN-corrupted and UN-polluted India or a nation.  Children (though you are an engineer you are child of your parents), obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother - which is the first commandment with a promise - that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth" (Eph 6:1-3)

Believing in Yourself, Succeeding and Making Dreams Come True

I have been thinking about aspiration and survival. Take a family and community whose culture places massive value on aspiration and the qualities of life that nurture it - protection, promotion, love and respect, nurturing. The right to believe in yourself; making dreams come true, being real, succeeding, finding fulfillment – without paying a huge price - is an integral part of that culture. Survival is presumed.

Then look at a culture where pain and suffering are elevated to the status of the only worthwhile human experience. The most important person is perhaps the son of God, who ended up on a cross, being tortured to death out of love for ordinary folks. Perhaps each person is born with a brand of sin on their soul, and if they get it wrong in life they end up in hell. Sex is dirty. Poverty, suffering and self-denial are saintly virtues.

Combine that deadly, asphyxiating, soul and heart-destroying culture with perhaps a family one driven by a parent whose needs are paramount, who will even fake crises. Add a dash of molestation or worse to the mix and you end up with a somewhat minimized capacity to survive in the world let alone develop any aspirations you may have.

In such an environment, everybody is trying to survive - and learning from the parent how to do it at the expense of others. If there is a child with talent or strong aspirations, the family will stifle it, and they are unlikely to be aware of what they are doing. The message on the surface may be "we love you" but the real one is "drop dead, there is no ways we are going to let you get ahead."

I had aspirations of what I wanted to do from a young age, but I had a jealous parent and siblings and there was not even enough attention for me to learn how to survive in the world. So I have spent my life wrestling with just survival, when inside my heart and soul I have been longing to fly. My aspirations have always burned from within. But if you do not know how to survive, you can forget about being able to develop your aspirations. I have often felt like a wild animal thrashing against the bars of its cage.

The good news is that you can work with what you were exposed to in the past to change your life forever. I know, because I am doing it; building self-esteem, entitlement and emotional fluency and correcting misshapen beliefs and myths about life and who I am. What my family and my culture could not do for me I am learning to do for myself. Survive well, and flourish, without compromising myself.  I am changing my life and stepping out of history.

I reckon next time I am born it is going to be in a nurturing family culture, with lots of love, emotional fluency, lots of celebration of aspirations, great generosity of spirit - which would be cosmically stepping out of history I guess!

SureFooted Puzzle9

There are 100 prisoners in solitary cells. There's a central living room with one light bulb; this bulb is initially off. No prisoner can see the light bulb from his or her own cell. Everyday, the warden picks a prisoner equally at random, and that prisoner visits the living room. While there, the prisoner can toggle the bulb if he or she wishes. Also, the prisoner has the option of asserting that all 100 prisoners have been to the living room by now. If this assertion is false, all 100 prisoners are shot. However, if it is indeed true, all prisoners are set free. Thus, the assertion should only be made if the prisoner is 100% certain of its validity. The prisoners are allowed to get together one night in the courtyard, to discuss a plan. What plan should they agree on, so that eventually, someone will make a correct assertion?
